For several years the river path between Glenkevock House and Kevock Steps has been a quagmire caused by water running off the Mavisbank Policies. We approached Historic Scotland, who own the policies, and following a site meeting it was agreed that they would create a system of land drains which will channel the water to a series of points from which it could be piped under the path and into the old mill lade. Before this could happen, however, the already full mill lade needed to be cleared. So this gave us our project for this summer. Eighteen people worked exceptionally hard for over two hours. The pictures below tell the story and there will have been many sore backs necessitating long hot baths (also for the mud). The end result was better than we had hoped for - the lade running free and the whole area looking much more open. Many thanks to all who turned up. There is a fair amount of brushwood to burn once it has dried out and smaller groups will be needed from time to time to clear silt, but for now a great achievement. |
